And we're back! After a three-week absence from this column and a full week off social media, That being said, I was quite busy behind the scenes as it were and am happy to report an updated Roster Page and full divisional records for all of 2019, 2020 and 2021 are now all available in the on Spreadsheets section of this website. I encourage all of you to check it out and let me know what you think. Lastly, plans for how to best present 2022 and All-time stats are currently being discussed.
On with the monthly update!
AEW aired 126 matches in January 2022, totalling over 11 hours of in-ring action across 18 programs. In keeping with the new divisional direction, I present the following three Top 10 Lists covering the divisions that receive official rankings through January 31, 2022. Special coloured designations are assigned for recognized champions and ranked individuals/teams.
Undisputed TNT Champion Sammy Guevara ascended to the top of the Men's Singles Metrics table to close out the month by slaying his personal dragon in the form of Cody Rhodes. Defeating the Grandson of a Plumber allowed the Spanish God take his Quality Points to new heights. World Champion Adam Page sits in second place as he prepares to do battle with Lance Archer on February 9. Not to be overlooked, Adam Cole, despite the loss in the unsanctioned Lights Out Match to Orange Cassidy, seems to be next in line for Hangman, likely at the Revolution Pay Per View in early March.
Jade Cargill is the runaway leader as we close out January. The TBS Champion has already defended her newly won championship twice and looks to be in no immediate danger of losing it. Her undefeated streak currently sits at 26 and will likely not falter any time soon. Who will challenge her next then? Both Velvet and Jay are coming off losses, so as unlikely as it seems, I think that the Chief Brand Officer Brandi Rhodes will be rising to the occasion in short order. Recall that Rhodes was replaced in the Mixed Tag match last year due to her pregnancy and never quite got her hands on "That Bitch". For her part, Women's World Champion Dr. Britt Baker, DMD may soon be facing down Legit Leyla Hirsch in a battle of submissions before the dentist resumes her longstanding feud with Thunder Rosa. I also want to shout out The Professor Serena Deeb for her commendable character work of late. The Woman of a Thousand Holds is proving that she is an asset both in and out of the ring for AEW.
It's clearly the champions and everyone else with Jurassic Express simply steamrolling the competition en route to a perfect record this month complete with a pair of title defenses. They have been vocal about taking on anyone in the official Top 5 so it must be stated that the Kings of the Black Throne, despite only the lone victory, seemed primed to take up the challenge although perhaps not for a few more weeks as first Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus need to dispatch of Ass Boys Gunn Club. I don't mind sharing that I genuinely thought Jurassic Express were headed to a big television or maybe even Pay Per View showdown with The Acclaimed before Caster and Reynolds were dispatched by Darby and Sting. As noted previously, this isn't the first time this duo has defeated a ranked team and the fact that they aren't ranked is dubious to be sure. On some level, it's obvious as the only way out of the rankings is to lose and it's just not time for Darby and Sting to lose quite yet.
