AEW Power Rankings: Factions - September 2022

All Out saw the crowning of the inaugural AEW Trios Champions and as expected this led to some big gains in our faction rankings.

Groups out of Contention

Undisputed Elite: With the news that Bobby Fish would not have his contract renewed, this spells the end for ReDragon in AEW. While the Undisputed Elite could remain a unit, for now they're down a soldier and the two remaining members are still hurt.

Groups to Watch

Hathaway Enterprises: A major piece of this puzzle dropped at All Out as a returning MJF was revealed to be aligned with Hathaway and company. The other question is how much involvement The Baddies will have with this new conglomeration. Are they all under the Hathaway umbrella? We also need to see this group function as a unit and not just share a publicist. They're off to a good start as all these signees (Gunn Club, Moriarty, Morrissey) have potential.

Death Triangle: While PAC is rocking that All-Atlantic Championship and doing some cool things with it, the luster of Death Triangle has been tarnished of late. High profile losses to United Empire, combined with a string of singles losses, has resulted in a poor win percentage of 60% for the group in 2022.

Pinnacle Redux? (no MJF edition): If FTR and Wardlow want to continue their alliance post All Out, they would be a powerhouse trio within AEW. The three of them are already covered in championships and it wouldn't be hard to imagine them adding the AEW Trios Titles to their collections.

How Rankings are Determined:

Strength: The combined win % of team members. Special thanks to @AEWmetrics who keeps better records of win/loss than AEW's own roster page. I also went to cagematch.net to check on workers not signed with AEW (like Julia Hart for some bizarre reason).

Cohesion: Ability of a group to work together. If they can avoid tripping over each other or hitting each other with moves they will score higher. Points will be lost if cracks are starting to form within the group. This category is fairly subjective. For the first time in these rankings, all five of the top teams scored high.

Purpose: Even if not expressly stated, most groups have some form of a "mission statement". This could range from winning championships to simply the love of violence.

Attainment: The ability to win championships. Currently there are championships from AEW, ROH, and AAA in play although titles from Impact and NJPW have also been featured in the past. I will only count belts that have been featured on camera on AEW programing (sorry Defy World Tag Team Champions Christopher Daniels/Swerve Strickland!).

#5 House of Black

Strength- Mid: 75%. The loss at All Out dropped the group a full 4%. Had things played out differently (and a couple more single victories) the House of Black could have ranked higher on Strength alone.

Cohesion- High: It will be interesting to see how the group functions if Black takes a sabbatical. Brody King is a great talent but his best role is that of the heavy, not as the leader. Maybe Julia Hart could step up?

Purpose- High: Be spooky.

Attainment- N/I: Nothing and it looks like that's not going to change anytime soon.

Malakai Black - Team Captain

Brody King - Heavyweight Lineman

Buddy Matthews- All Star Wide Receiver

Julia Hart - Point Leading Kicker

#4 Jericho Appreciation Society

Strength- Mid: 75%

Cohesion- Mid: Daniel Garcia may say he's a sports entertainer, but you can tell he has his doubts.

Purpose- High: Still Appreciating Jericho.

Attainment- High: I go back and forth on the prestige of the AAA Mixed-Tag Championship. It feels like a disservice to rank it lower than the ROH titles, but it's placement on AEW programming speaks volumes. Relegated to defenses on PPV-Pre Shows in quick matches. Still, a championship is a championship.

Chris Jericho - Magneto

Daddy Magic - Avalanche

Angelo Parker - Pyro

Jake Hager - Juggernaut

Daniel Garcia - Omega Red

Sammy Guevara - Toad

Anna Jay - Emma Frost

Tay Melo - Mystique

#3 The Baddies

Strength- Mid: 73%

Cohesion- High: Functioning as a solid team.

Purpose- High: Support the house that Jade built.

Attainment- High: One could argue that the TBS Championship is one of AEW's most sought after. One champion in it's history and no interim reigns. Whoever takes the belt from Cargill will have achieved something unique.

Jade Cargill - Leonardo

Red Velvet - Raphael

Kiera Hogan - Michelangelo

Leila Grey - Donatello

#2 The Elite

Strength- Mid: 71%

Cohesion- High: Everything is a-ok within the Elite!

Purpose- High: They set their sights on the Trios Championships and they achieved it.

Attainment- High: This is a faction ranking and the Trios Championship is the top title for factions. Despite having a lower win% than the Baddies, The Elite have possession of the Trios Belts and these carry more weight (literally) than the single TBS championship.

Kenny Omega-Captain Kirk (the Id)

Matt Jackson-Bones McCoy (The Ego)

Nick Jackson- Spock (The SuperEgo)

#1 Blackpool Combat Club

Strength- High: 81% The only group with a win percentage over 80%.

Cohesion- High: Solid as a rock.

Purpose- High: Still bleeding in most every town they stop in.

Attainment- High: Despite the loss of the AEW World Championship, the combined ROH championships held by Claudio and Yuta still keep the group in high championship standing.

Moxley - John "Hannibal" Smith

Danielson - Templeton Peck

Wheeler Yuta - Howling Mad Murdock

Claudio Castagnoli - BA Baracus
